Flash & Short Story Fiction
As my attempt to make sense of the nonsensical —
writing has saved my life...
My first “Writer’s Retreats”
occurred when I was twelve and climbed to my perch
in a beloved pinus strobus (white pine.)
The strong scent of Christmas surrounded me
as I spied on my siblings, parents, and neighbors,
and scrawled notes in an attempt
to make sense of my petite world.
And though the world continues to launch into the nonsensical
faster than I can strike my keys
— faster than the speed of light —
I am still trying to make sense of it
as I “freak out” and write my flash and short story fiction,
this time from a more comfortable perch,
my Water Otter Inn Writer’s Retreat.
My Water Otter Inn
I invite you to escape with me
The Inn is a classic home in Washburn, Wisconsin's historical district.
It is within walking distance of downtown shops, art galleries,
and the Big Top Chautauqua shuttle stop,
close to several lovely beaches and hiking trails,
and within 15 minutes drive of Bayfield,
gateway to Madeline Island and the Apostle Islands.
Between the Chequamegon National Forest and Lake Superior,
Washburn is a haven for fishing, skiing, snowshoeing, hiking,
paddling, birding, swimming, and beach bumming.
Paddle the waterways for possible sightings of otters,
sandhill cranes, bald eagles, and ice/sea caves.
